Since the project was announced over two years ago, we’ve seen little to no progression on Dark Shadows, the updated remake of the 60′s daytime supernatural soap opera that originally starred Jonathan Frid as a 175-year-old vampire named Barnabas Collins. Johnny Depp has been attached to produce and star in the adaptation since the project’s inception with Tim Burton directing. Awhile back, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory collaborator John August was involved (presumably in a writing capacity), but now Variety reports that author Seth Grahame-Smith (of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies!) has signed on to write the script.
Grahame-Smith has already been linked to another Tim Burton project as he is adapting his other alternate history novel, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, with Burton & Timur Bekmambetov producing. Though this is certainly a step forward in development, we still don’t have a solid release date for Dark Shadows yet. The only hint at an estimated release is sometime before 2014 since the film was mentioned in the package deal for WB to release up to 20 of their films in IMAX through 2013. If the hype surrounding vampires and Depp comes together sooner than later, this will definitely be quite an anticipated film. Still interested?
